What are mangroves?
Amphibious forests on tropical coastal zones, that grow in areas flooded by the tides. They mainly comprise of mangrove trees.
Why are mangroves important?
Because it is where different land and water species interact. They are breeding grounds and shelters for many animals during their first stages of life. Furthermore, they provide nutrients to marine ecosystems, filter the water, and serve as a buffer against the impact of weather phenomena such as hurricanes.
What mangrove species can we find in the Sea of Cortez?
Red Mangrove (Rhizophora mangle), White Mangrove (Laguncularia racemosa), Black Mangrove (Avicennia germinans) and Buttonwood (Conocarpus erectus).
