Fun facts
The word Achirus means “without hands”, and Mazatlanus probably alludes to the place (Mazatlán) where this specimen, described by the Austrian Zoologist Franz Steindachner in 1869, was caught.
General aspects
Oval-shaped body with both eyes on its right side, and a small, arched mouth. Of a dark grey or brownish color. It has 8 dark lines on the side of its eyes, and groups of dispersed, black strands.
It lives in coastal waters at a depth of under 65 feet, swims into coastal lagoons and freshwater.
It feeds on crustaceans, small fish, bristle worms and organic waste.
