Oysters are excellent indicators of marine environmental health. They act as biomonitors, because they filter and accumulate contaminants.

Its shell is either oval or elongated, heavy and thick. Its exterior is of a brownish-purple color and its interior is irridescent white with brown patches.

It lives in the rocky zone where the ocean tide rises and falls.

It feeds on phytoplankton and organic matter.
