What is a coral?
Corals are marine animals that live in close interaction with microscopic algae, that enter the corals and provide them with energy through photosynthesis.
How are reefs formed?
Small, individual corals (polyps) form colonies that protect themselves with a calcium carbonate skeleton. All together, these structures constitute a coral reef.
What is the importance of coral reefs?
They are highly diverse environments, meaning, they harbor a great variety of marine life. They serve as a shelter and feeding zone for different species.
