Females are more territorial and establish mating relationships with males.

Juveniles have been observed as cleaner fish for other fish.

It has a rectangular body shape. Adults are greyish-dark blue with a slim white vertical stripe, yellowish-orange fins and an orange spot on the corner of their mouth. Juveniles are multicolored with vertical stripes.

It feeds on sea sponges, invertebrates, plankton and algae.

It lives in rocky and coral reefs.
