Fun facts
They form huge shoals of hundreds of billions of individuals. The fast and coordinated movement of these shoals is a way to escape their predators.
Pilchards are migratory fish, and can travel distances of up to 620 miles a year, between its feeding and spawning habitats.
They are a very important fishing resource in Mexico.
General aspects
The Californian Pilchard has a thin, cilindrical body, of approximately 8 inches. Its backside is a greenish-blue and its sides are white, with 1 to 3 series of dark spots.
It feeds on plankton.
