Fun facts
Sometimes this mangrove strikes up a mutually beneficial relationship with sea sponges, that settle their roots to exchange nutrients.
It is used as firewood and to build furniture and musical instruments. Its bark produces a blue ink that is used as dye. It is also used as a traditional medicinal remedy for marine animal bites, fever and other health problems.
General aspects
This tree has wader roots. Its bark is smooth, gray, from a redish to a brown color. It maintains the dark green color of its leaves year-around.
The color of its flowers ranges from a greenish-yellow to beige. Its brownish-red fruit has the form of a berry. A spear-like seed is formed and floats inside the fruit. The fruit grows with the seed already germinated on the tree.
It likes to live “with its feet in the water” so to speak, in flooded grounds with variable salinity.
