Fun facts
Sometimes, it is viviparous. This means that its seeds germinate within the fruit, while it is still on the tree.
Its bark has substances called tannins, that are used for leather tanning.
It has been traditionally used to treat dysentery and health problems, because of its astringent and tonic properties.
General aspects
It is a shrub with a greyish-brown, ridged, rugged bark. Its opposing leaves are yellowish-green, rounded, fleshy, without visible veins, and they have a couple of bulges (glands).
Its whitish-green flowers bloom in spikes, and appear from July to October. Its fruit has an almond form.
It lives in estuaries and coves, on seldom flood-prone sandy or clay grounds. It is vulnerable to wind, due to its superficial roots.
