It has been proven that the coelomic fluid of this sea urchin has an antiviral effect against rabies and pseudorabies.
It grows much faster than other sea urchins.
It has photoreceptor cells, and it has been suggested that the urchin´s entire body functions as a large compound eye.
General aspects
Compressed, globe-like body, with a reddish-brown base and thorns with the same base color, and is yellowish-white from its middle to its point.
It lives in rocky seabeds covered by algae, seagrass meadows and coral reef plains.
It is most commonly found in shallow waters. It feeds on algae and some invertebrates.
